Hold your Joey tight! BOOKS ACTIVITIES "K is for Kick" coloring sheet -Reinforces vocabulary and practice handwriting skills. Letter K Coloring Book - Reinforces vocabulary and develops an interest and confidence in reading books. 1. Fold along the middle dotted line. 2. Fold back and forth along the dotted lines like a fan, ensuring the title page is on the outside. 3. Put two staples to secure the spine. 4. Cut along the open edge so that all the pages open. "K is for Kite" Craft - Develop fine motor and problem solving skills 1. Print the template on various colors of card stock. There are three kites per template and I've done my best to set it up in a way that minimizes cutting. 2. Cut the triangle pieces out (or if you have older kids, you can let them give it a go.) You can use this as a good teaching opportunity both for triangles, and for "Big, Medium, Small" since there are three sizes of triangles. 3. Mix up the colors, so that each student can get a variety of pieces for their kite craft. 4. Children can glue the pieces in the correct spaces on their kite picture. RHYMES Here are the lyrics to our favorite letter i rhymes! The Itsy Bitsy Spider The itsy bitsy spider went up the water spout Down came the rain and washed the spider out Out came the sun and dried up all the rain And the itsy bitsy spider went up the spout again I is for Iguana Iguana starts with letter I, "Ick!" "Ick" Iguana starts with Letter I, /i/ /i/ /i/ /i/ (To the tune of London Bridge. I like this much better than the Jolly Phonics i song. I adapted it from here, but changed it to Iguana. When you say the /i/ sound, shreek and scrunch your shoulders and nose! ) BOOKS When I read books to my kids, I try to replace as many words as I can with ones that they have already learned, or will be learning in the coming weeks. In "The Big Itch", you will find both of the words itch and scratch, but just stick with itch. You also may want to refer to George as Monkey, or begin the book by explaining that the monkey's name is George. You can also explore these great letter i videos. What is an Igloo? - I love this one especially because none of my kids actually know what an Igloo is (we live in the tropics!) Also, it is made by a small boy, so they can relate well. Itsy Bitsy Spider and the Letter i ACTIVITIES The letter i coloring sheet will help you reinforce the letter i vocabulary words with your students. Interact with them while they are coloring, and repeat the words often. The Igloo coloring sheet will help them recognize the capital and lowercase characters for the letter i. RHYMES Here are the lyrics to our favorite letter H rhymes! The Wheels on the Bus (Horn) The Horn on the bus goes Honk, Honk, Honk Honk, Honk, Honk, Honk, Honk, Honk The Horn on the bus goes Honk, Honk, Honk All through the town. Humpty Dumpty Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall Humpty Dumpty had a great fall All the king's horses and all the king's men, Couldn't put Humpty together again Jolly Phonics - H I like to hop, hop, hop Up and Down I like to hop, hop, hop All Around /h/ /h/ /h/ /h/ /h/ (To the tune of I like to Eat Apples and Bananas) Take the Rhymes a Step Forward! Humpty Dumpty is a great way to start introducing Question words to your ESL student. I teach them the rhyme, using pictures, videos and drawings. Then I ask questions like these: Q: What is Humpty Dumpty A: Egg Q: What did Humpty Dumpty do? A: Sat on a wall Q: What happened to Humpty Dumpty? A: He fell Q: Who tried to put Humpty Dumpty together again? A: King's horses, King's Men Another fun activity is putting the story in order. I drew 4 boxes on the board to represent what happened in the story. Then I had the children tell me the correct order. You could also use screenshots from a Youtube video and print them out as flashcards. BOOKS Hippo Has a Hat, doesn't have near as many H words as you might first assume, but it goes through several different animals and articles of clothing. Start asking good questions like "What color is the Lion's dress?" or "What is the caterpillar wearing?" This will keep them engaged in the story and will reinforce their English conversational skills. Of course, a great activity for these books would be to make a hat. You don't need anything but some old newspaper for that!
The H is for Heart worksheet is a fun one because, well, what kid doesn't like ripping up paper? You will have a happy class and a happy heart of your own during this activity. Just give the kids scrap paper of all different colors for them to tear and glue into the heart shape. And who knew? Tearing paper also helps with fine motor skills! While everyone is Happy, you can also check out the Happy/Sad Worksheet. Print it double sided and have the kids fill in the circles with the appropriate emotions. Here we are at the letter G! For my flashcards and phonics teaching, I only teach the hard G sound that is in Gorilla, not Giraffe. This keeps it simpler for now. I do incorporate books and videos that mention the other sound, but I don't explicitly teach it. RHYMES Here are the lyrics to our favorite letter G rhymes! Go, Go, Go, How can you get where you want to go? You can go fast or you can go slow, You can high or you can go low, There are so many ways to go, go, go! Green Grass The Green Grass Grows Around the Gate Around the Gate Around the Gate The Green Grass Grows Around the Gate In my Granpa's Garden (To the tune of Wheels on the Bus) Jolly Phonics - G The water gurgles down the drain, The water gurgles down the drain, The water gurgles down the drain, With a /g/ /g/ /g/ /g/ /g/ (To the tune of Skip to my Lou) BOOKS If you can't get your hands on these great books, you can at least find Good Night Gorilla and Giraffes Can't Dance on Youtube. I prefer reading them myself, because I often change words and simplify sentences. But at least the videos will hold their attention! ACTIVITIES The coloring worksheet for the letter G is a great way to repeat the vocabulary. When the kids bring me their finished worksheet I ask them to point to each picture as I say the word. I love this "Goat in the Grass" craft because they can do the cutting completely on their own. Since they don't have to stay on any lines, even the weaker students can do this by themselves and come away with a great looking craft! You can download the goat picture from the end of the post, and then give each student 1/3 of a piece of green card stock. Make sure to ruffle the grass a bit after its cut! This is also a good time to do some reviewing of all of the letters. I have included some review sheets to practice identifying the first letter sounds from the words we have been learning. RHYMES Here are the lyrics to our favorite F songs and rhymes! Five Little Speckled Frogs Five little speckled frogs, Sat on a great big log, Eating the most delicious bugs, Yum Yum! One jumped into the pool, Where it was nice and cool, Now there are four speckled frogs, Glub, Glub! (Repeat, until you are left with no more frogs!) 12345 Once I Caught a Fish Alive 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 Once I caught a fish alive 5 -6 -7 - 8 - 9 - 10 Then I threw him back again Why did you let it go? Because it bit my finger so. Which finger did it bite? This little finger on my right. Jolly Phonics - F My friends and I went to the beach With my floating fish It got a hole, the air came out /fffffffffffffffffff/ (To the tune of Skip to my Lou) BOOKS There are tons of Froggy books to pick from, but I chose "Froggy Gets Dressed" since we were learning about parts of the body and hygiene. People have come up with pretty creative activities for that book alone. ACTIVITIES This activity, you can do with any letter of the alphabet, of course the ones with just straight lines will be easiest for beginners. I love it because its cheap and helps develop the fine motor skills by using scissors and glue. I don't think it needs any more explanation than find some newspaper and let the fun begin! Download the letter F coloring sheet (great for practicing vocab) from my links below, and download the Froggy craft from Kidzclub. One more fun group activity is making a fish ocean of everyone's hands. Let each student pick the color of their fish and have them repeat the color name if they don't know it already. This project practices colors, F vocabulary, and parts of the body. Stick a googley eye on the wet paint, and repeat the words, "hand, fingers, eye" as much as you can! Vowels, can be tricky. I discovered just how confusing the English language is when I began learning other languages. There are so many sounds that one vowel can make, but I have chosen to start with just the short sound first. As I get later in the alphabet, I start explaining how some *special* letters make more than one sound. Now on to Ee... If you can get your hands on some plastic Easter eggs, there are SO many cool learning games you can do throughout the week. RHYMES Ellie the Elephant Ellie the Elephant, So big, so fat. She walks like this, She walks like that. She has no fingers, She has no toes. But goodness gracious! What a long nose! Jolly Phonics - E Eggs in the pan, /e/ /e/ /e/ Eggs in the pan, /e/ /e/ /e/ Eggs in the pan, /e/ /e/ /e/ Crack the egg like this - /e/ (To the tune of Skip to my Lou) BOOKS Here are some classics for the Letter E. I am not a huge fan of Clifford books, but the kids LOVE him, and its a good opportunity to practice the short sight words "big" "red" and "dog". Elmer is the most fun and simple enough for the kids to follow. ACTIVITIES The E coloring activity is pretty simple and flexible. It is an "e - envelope". I chose to have the students glue them to card stock so that I could easily put it in their activity binder. But you can also leave it as an envelope that they can carry around. Step 1 : Color, Step 2: Cut, Step 3: Glue the E card to the outside and put the rest inside. You can either buy envelopes or use a template to create your own. Its also super fun to color Elmer. I got this coloring page from AZcoloring.com. FREE DOWNLOADS Please download my letter E coloring page and flashcards to use for personal and educational purposes. Once you have reached "D" week, you will have a nice collection of picture flashcards. These are perfect for playing a lot of great phonics games. Have the kids practice sorting them according to their beginning sounds, or matching them to the correct letter. Another fun way to incorporate all of the vocabulary is this picture story I have included with the free downloads. The kids will be so excited that they can help you read the story! RHYMES Add new verses to the Wheels on the Bus -The doors on the bus go open and close -The driver on the bus says please sit down Jolly Phonics - D See me play, on my drum Playing drums is lots of fun /d/ /d/ /d/ /d/ /d/ /d/ /d/ /d/ /d/ /d/ /d/ /d/ See me play upon my drum (To the tune of "This Old Man") BOOKS Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb is such a good one for D and goes hand in hand with our unit on body parts. Unfortunately I couldn't find a copy where I am, so I've been using this YouTube version. I turn the sound off and read it myself with the kids. Go, Dog, Go tends to bore my kids by the end of the book, because there is no real story line. But its great for vocabulary words and prepositions, so I use a few pages at a time in my small group teaching times. ACTIVITIES The D Coloring page will help reinforce the D vocabulary words. And there is a coloring page to go along with Harry the Dirty Dog from AZcoloring.com. A fun and cheap activity that you can do with the kids is making their own drums. You can do this with materials as simple as a can and balloons. Check out this great tutorial from KidsActivitiesBlog. Of course, the bottom of a can will work just as well for a drum, if you don't have the supplies or time to make them! Let the kids bang on their homemade drums while you read Hands, Hands, Fingers, Thumb. They will have so much fun! FREE DOWNLOADS You are free to download my letter D coloring page and flashcards to use for personal and educational purposes. Please do not sell them or offer them as your own. There are some great kid words that start with the letter C. Who doesn't love cake and cars? A universal truth of kids in any country, speaking any language is that they love things that Go! When teaching the letter C, you can use toy cars for a variety of games. "Count the Cars", "Sort the Cars", and plain old "Play with the Cars" are all great filler letter C activities. When I teach the word comb, I also tie in some personal hygiene lessons, since we spend the first quarter of the year learning body parts as well. RHYMES Pat-a-Cake Pat-a-Cake, Pat-a-Cake, Baker Man Bake me a cake as fast as you can Roll it, Pat it, Mark it with a 'C' Put it in the oven for my friends and me! (I know, I know, I changed the lyrics a bit, but I want to use C as much as possible. Make sure to use lots of hand motions on this one!) Jolly Phonics - C We are clicking castanets /c/ /c/ /c/ We are clicking castanets /c/ /c/ /c/ We are clicking castanets, clicking castanets, We are clicking castanets /c/ /c/ /c/ (To the tune of "She'll be comin round the mountain." I hesitated to use this one, because I didn't even know what a castanet was! But I ordered one off Amazon and we all learned together. If you don't have access or funds to buy one, you can make your own) BOOKS Here is the book list for the letter C. They are some of my favorites from the whole year. We read The Very Hungry Caterpillar all year long, especially as we learn about food groups in the second quarter. ACTIVITIES The coloring sheet helps reinforce the vocabulary they learned of words that start with the letter C. The C is for Clouds craft gives good tracing and gluing practice. You can print it on blue paper, like I did, or have them color or paint white paper first. They can trace the dotted lines and then fill in the clouds with cotton balls, tissue paper or torn pieces of white paper. Its such an easy craft idea that can be modified with whatever resources that you have. For older kids, use blank paper and let them make their own fun cloud shape, like in the book "Little Cloud" by Eric Carle. FREE DOWNLOADS You are free to download my letter C coloring page and flashcards to use for personal and educational purposes. Please do not sell them or offer them as your own. I love B because there are so many different things you can do with it. Teaching time doesn't just have to be in the classroom. Bring a ball or bubbles for the kids to enjoy outside. And on the last day of the week, you can give each child a blue balloon for a job well done! RHYMES The Wheels on the Bus v. 1 The Wheels on the Bus go Round and Round Round and Round, Round and Round The Wheels on the Bus go round and round All Through the Town v. 2 The Baby on the Bus goes Wah Wah Wah (I add additional verses each week, and try to coordinate them as much with vocabulary we are learning) Row Your Boat Row, Row, Row your Boat Gently down the Stream Merrily, Merrily, Merrily, Merrily Life is but a dream Jolly Phonics - B Bring your bat and bring your ball /b/ /b/ Bring your bat and bring your ball To the park to play (To the tune Camptown Races) BOOKS The kids also love watching the Berenstain's B Book on Youtube. ACTIVITIES The B coloring sheet is great for remembering the vocabulary. Sometimes I will color a sample sheet, or display the flashcards to help them see what color the items are. This is a good way to get them recognizing colors and color names. The boat craft utilizes cutting, tracing, coloring and glueing skills. The skill level is flexible. For kids that are younger, print the boat pieces on colored paper to reduce the amount of coloring, and cut out the pieces ahead of time if they aren't able to use scissors. I have made everything with mostly straight lines, so it is good scissor practice for beginners. DOWNLOADS You are free to download my letter B flashcards and coloring page to use for personal and educational purposes. Please do not sell them or offer them as your own.
