For Mother's Day this year, I was asked to create a printable for a church to pass out to all of the women attending that day. They are currently going through the book of 1 Samuel and wanted me to create something based on the verse 1 Samuel 16:7, "For God sees not as man sees. Man looks at the outward appearance but the Lord looks at the heart." This is definitely a verse that we women need to be reminded of constantly! But I could not envision myself making a flowery, trendy-looking (or in other words, our definition of beauty) print for this verse in particular. As we've been studying habitats in our science curriculum, I have been so amazed at the diversity of created beings and how so many of them do not fit our standard of beauty. There are some pretty intense and ugly-looking fish and insects out there! But God created them brilliantly and gave them some pretty amazing attributes. His definition of beauty is obviously different than ours. So I debated putting a crazy looking blobfish or a creepy salamander. But then I was afraid no one would put it on their wall! Then I started thinking, what does God find beautiful inside of us? Is it inner perfection? Nobody's got that, especially not David, whom God was referring to in this particular passage. Then my mind wandered to Psalm 51:17, "The sacrifice pleasing to God is a broken spirit. You will not despise a broken and humbled heart, God." (CSB) This is what God finds beautiful in us. Its not our looks OR our amazing personality, our passion or our zeal (although he certainly gives us those good gifts as well) But all of those things without a broken spirit before Him are still lacking. I hope this print encourages you and reminds you to pursue what is truly valuable and to find beauty in the most broken parts of your life! ![]()
